Hyacinthus Iceberg Meme EXPLAIN (P2)
Part 1 ✿ Part 2 ✿ Part 3 ✿ Part 4 ✿ Part 5
It's time for me to answer your questions about this Hyacinthus iceberg meme. There is a lot to tackle, so I'll divide it into 5 parts for the sake of my sanity.
Quick disclaimer: I am NOT an expert in Greek mythology, just a fan of Hyacinthus who wants to learn about him and anyone related to him. Most of the things I'm about to discuss are just theories and speculations of a passerby on the Internet, so do not take them as valid facts!
Apollo x Hyacinthus x Cyparissus
This OT3 has one painting made by Alexander Andreyevich Ivanov, but it's enough to convince me they are canon.
Tumblr media
What's interesting about Hyacinthus and Cyparissus is that they are also pursued by Zephyrus, and the flower/tree they transform into after death represents mourning and sorrow.
"A young Lakonian [Hyakinthos] shook Zephyros; but he died, and the amorous Wind found young Cyparissus a consolation for Amyklaian Hyakinthos." - Nonnus, Dionysiaca
"[Apollo to Cyparissus] And the God, groaning with sorrow, said, 'You shall be mourned sincerely by me, surely as you mourn for others, and forever you shall stand in grief, where others grieve.'" - Ovid, "Metamorphoses"
Apollo x Hyacinthus x Boreas
I used to talk about this OT3 before. It's interesting because, unlike Zephyrus, Boreas seems fine with Hyacinthus dating Apollo and even dated Apollo before.
There aren't any paintings or ancient literature written explicitly about their relationship. It's more of an "if you think about it" thought.
(I won't discuss Apollo & Boreas because we will get off track, but there is a post about them for anyone interested!)
Hyacinthus' death symbolizes the vegetation wilted under the summer heat
Since Hyacinthus is assumed to be a pre-Hellenic nature god, and Apollo is the god of sunlight, we can piece together that Hyacinthus dying by Apollo is the metaphor of the plants dying under the scorching sun. This is why I said in Part 1 that Zephyrus killing Hyacinthus is a later version, and I'll say his present will ruin the myth. Having Zephyrus (the wind) as the "real" culprit will erase the original symbolism of the sun killing the plants.
(Sorry for hating you all this time, Zeph. You are in the clear now.)
Back to the main point.
Georg Friedrich Schömann seems to coin this theory in his book "Griechische Alterthümer" (1855), or he's only popularizing an existing theory. At least, that is the reference I get from the two of the sources I read.
Tumblr media
(Hellenica World, "Hyacinthia")
Tumblr media
(Michael Pettersson, "Cults of Apollo at Sparta: The Hyakinthia, the Gymnopaidai, and the Karneia")
Pettersson's essay also mentions G. F. Unger, another author who supports the theory.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or we can take a step further and say this myth is about one god usurping another. As I said, Hyacinthus is a god worshipped in Amyclae long before the arrival of Apollo, so it's not a stretch to say his death at Apollo's hands also metaphorizes his cult getting replaced by Apollo's cult. It's the same as Apollo killing and replacing the Python as the patron of Delphi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Damian Pierzak, "The Case of Apollo and Hyacinth in the 'Second Tetralogy' Attributed to Antiphon")
However, there is one thing that I haven't understood.
In the myths, once Apollo killed the Python, he took over the Delphin temple for good. But in the case of Hyacinthus, Apollo is said to mourn Hyacinthus greatly and later revive him from death. He even shared the Hyacinthia festival and Amyclean shrine with Hyacinthus, with his statue built on top of Hyacinthus' tomb)
Is there a historical event that made the people worship both gods together instead of replacing one with another? Or are Apollo and Hyacinthus' joint worship an eventual thing? We'll never know for sure.
Hyacinthus is resurrected + Hyacinthus represents the death and rebirth cycle of nature
Hyacinthus' resurrection is like the hidden ending most people are unaware of, but it's a thing. No, we are not making it up because there are legit records and studies about it.
Tumblr media
(Pausanias, "Description of Greece")
Tumblr media
(Nonnus, "Dionysiaca")
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Angeliki Petropoulou, "Hyakinthos and Apollo of Amyklai: Identities and Cults A Reconsideration of the Written Evidence")
From here, we can assume that Hyacinthus' death and resurrection is the allegory for the cycle of plant life and death, like how Persephone descending to and ascending from the Underworld is the allegory for season change.
However, I only draw this conclusion from mythology blogs. Few ancient poets and professional scholars seem to talk about this theme of Hyacinthus.
As of now, I've only got these two sources that slightly discuss it:
Tumblr media
(Ovid, "Metamorphoses")
Ovid's version is debatable because Hyacinthus still remains dead in his story. We can argue that Hyacinthus still "lives on" in the form of the flower, but it won't align with Hyacinthus' resurrection in the myths.
Tumblr media
(Damian Pierzak, "The Case of Apollo and Hyacinth in the 'Second Tetralogy' Attributed to Antiphon")
Again, Mr. Pierzak cites Ovid's retelling when he mentions the "Hyacinthus is connected to nature's rebirth" theory.
I'm still looking for more accounts (both from ancient Greek and scholarly research) where Hyacinthus is fully revived and symbolizes the plants' cycle. If anyone has anything, please let me know! I would love to read more!
The Hyacinthia festival
The Hyacinthia festival is confirmed not only in mythology but also in history.
Tumblr media
(Michael Pettersson, "Cults of Apollo at Sparta: The Hyakinthia, the Gymnopaidai, and the Karneia")
Tumblr media
(Pausanias, "Description of Greece")
Until now, people are still studying about this ancient festival.
Tumblr media
(Angeliki Petropoulou, "Hyakinthos and Apollo of Amyklai: Identities and Cults A Reconsideration of the Written Evidence")
I will talk about the Hyacinthia's rituals, practices, history, etc., but then we'll be here until next summer. So, I recommend everyone check out this post made by a Paganist for a deeper study.

Curious why do you ship Paris and Menelaus?
Quite a bit after I read the Iliad the first time (I came out of that not really shipping anything in particular; I was reading it more because of the connection of the Trojans to Ganymede), I saw that ask that first proposed the "Paris taking Menelaos instead of Helen" AU and got struck with a little bit of inspiration to write something short.
That, ahem, made me actually start thinking about the ship (and in particular about Paris, now here we are) and I lost my grip completely. :')
Paris spends nine days in Sparta, with Helen and Menelaos. He would in fact reasonably spend more time with Menelaos than Helen, but the point is - plenty of time for them to get to know each other (at least as much, if not more so, again, as for Paris and Helen). At the end of those nine days Menelaos feels comfortable just telling Helen to take care of their guest as he leaves for Crete. Yeah, that's a blend of "you don't make a guest leave before he's ready to" and undoubtedly trusting Helen - but presumably he also feels comfortable with Paris himself, to just take off that easily.
And then there is the variant tradition where Menelaos goes to Troy before Paris goes to Sparta, with that accidental killing of Antheus and Paris getting to go back with Menelaos to Sparta for exile/expiation. And while I wouldn't necessarily put them together, there's that additional trip to Delphi that Menelaos takes Paris with him on.
Like. There's just a lot of space for connection, and by all accounts it looks to me that Menelaos liked Paris.
The point of this is that the more personal the connection between them, the more the eventual betrayal of Paris leaving with Helen means. Them as friends or even lovers by the point it happens - good, that is a connection that will make the betrayal (even more) personal. It's not just about Helen, but the two of them. It's about Paris not just breaking xenia but whatever relationship has started to grow between them! That's just delightfully juicy, you know?
And then on top of that... the fact that neither of them are the epitome of masculinity as counted by the culture they live in (or rather, the story was written in). Paris more so than Menelaos/in different ways, but still, there's a similarity there that means you can have a connection and understanding/acceptance in. And that's interesting to dig into!
While I do think Paris could consider Menelaos attractive (even if he's not stunning or anything) there's plenty enough for him to end up liking that has nothing to do with physical looks.
And, aside from the fun of a full OT3, having the whole mess not just be about Menelaos > Helen < Paris, but the Paris and Menelaos leg also being connected (if separately from Helen) just makes everything more fun, interesting, and complicated lol.
Basically, the more I looked at them the more I shipped it. The duel itself is rife for sexual tension! And learning that there was some protests to the text variant that reads "ate" instead of "arche" in Menelaos' speech when he takes up the duel challenge, because the "ate" version was read as Menelaos vaguely excusing Paris...
Well, how can I not? No matter how angry Menelaos is, if it is indeed even a vague sort of excuse for Paris, even nine years in and having demanded "to the death" instead of Paris' "whoever loses", this practically writes itself.

Conversation
Teddy: Once when I was little I claimed it was a teacher’s work day so I wouldn’t have to go to school, and my grandma’s not an idiot so of course it didn’t work, but when we got to the school it actually was a teacher’s work day. Anyway, that made me think I had superpowers, so I started trying to kill classmates with my mind to confirm the theory.
Victoire: You thought you had superpowers so you immediately tried to murder everyone?
Delphi: Go big or go home.

least favorite storyline: honestly I need to reread MTMTE before I can answer this one. my brain is mush.

@evasnooramor  tagged me to talk about my works in progress so y’all ready for this incoherent mess? (lbr it’s mostly del and bellamort shenanigans bc i have no life)
1) okay so not-actually-currently-working on an AU that has Bellatrix in the Order during the First War and has gotten hella out of control. love it but can’t work on it atm because it involves doing too much of A Think and also makes me sad lol
2) Bellamort couloured kisses AU based on a tumblr post I can’t fully remember about kisses leaving a mark, colour and intensity depending on how the kisser feels about you
was going to be short and sweet, is now an angst fest and super long but nowhere near done. for some godforsaken reason it starts over a decade before they even meet
3) two different soulmate AUs that I might end up doing both but also might end up fusing into one and I genuinely have no clue how I will even decide. either “first words your soulmate says to you” or “your soulmate’s name on your wrist”. also Bellamort
4) Bellamortus soulmate AU that I probably will never write fully because I am not sure how I even ship it. I love Rodolphus to death but OT3 just only sometimes works for these bastards. Also neglected it so long I can’t remember the original premise and would now probably accidentally vaguely rip off Nele’s Jonooreva which sounds fucking adorable so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
5) coming out of left field, we have Elia and her babies surviving the sack of king’s landing. Started as an exploration of the Jaime Dilemma and then went elsewhere. why focus on Jaime when you could focus on Elia, am I right, folks???
6) Female!Voldemort, which I have put entirely too much thought in, and have written entirely too little down for. I love her so much though it’s a problem. Also it lets my bisexual darling Bella actually be with a woman in a fic of mine for an extended period yay im such a slut for bellamort it manages to outdo how much of a slut for wlw i am far too often
7) Tonks goes undercover as Bellatrix to spy on the Death Eaters mess that got a little too weird lol
8) like 19 Delphie AU prompts that haven’t gotten anywhere yet except for me making random memes at poor @evasnooramor about them. yes, memes are a part of my creation process far too often
9) a cersei x ned fic that i just cant let go of but am not actually working on at all nor have i been for like a year
I’m tagging @liightofthewest (only if you feel like it) and anyone else who wants to ;)

*This is right after she's found out about Bella/Voldy/Nyx* Father, I am not happy about this, and I would really rather you'd stop. But, because I know you won't, I have to say this: if you and mum hurt Nyx I will make your lives a living hell.
I do not doubt you in the slightest.
